Kemer-Antaliya; A significant conference addressing the impact of social media on European youth commenced today in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, and is set to continue until October 27, 2024. This important event, organized by the Center for Media and Dialogue, has drawn young participants from various countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Romania, Georgia, Finland, Armenia, and Turkey.

The conference aims to provide a platform for young individuals to engage in discussions aboutthe ways in which the digital landscape affects their lives, particularly concerning self-image and personal confidence. A key focus will be on how the imagery shared on various social media platforms influences perceptions of beauty and attractiveness, often shaping young people’s views of themselves and others.

In today’s digital agе, social Mеdia  has bеcomе a significant source of information for young pеoplе, including content related to body image. On onе hand, it offеrs valuablе rеsourcеs promoting body positivity and sеlf-accеptancе, empowering youth to develop a positive body image through sеlf-lovе. Howеvеr, instant access to such information also brings negative consequences, such as cybеrbullying and harmful comparisons, leading to sеvеrе mental health issues among young individuals

Abdulahi Mohamed  Chairman of the Center for Media and Dialogue, highlighted the significance of the conference as an opportunity for European youth to delve into the complexities of living in a digital age. He expressed the need for young people to understand both the challenges and opportunities that social media presents. Abdulahi  noted that he has brought 48 young delegates to Antalya as part of this legacy project, aiming to foster a constructive dialogue among them.

In our current digital environment, social media has become an integral source of information for youth, particularly concerning topics related to body image. On one hand, social media can serve as a powerful tool for promoting body positivity and encouraging self-love. Many influencers and campaigns advocate for a healthy self-image, empowering young people to embrace their uniqueness and develop a more positive body image.

Conversely, the rapid accessibility of information and images on social media can lead to detrimental effects. Young individuals may encounter unrealistic standards of beauty, prompting harmful comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. This phenomenon often manifests in bullying and can contribute to mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.

As the conference unfolds, participants will engage in workshops, discussions, and presentations aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of these issues. They will explore strategies for navigating social media more mindfully and harnessing its potential for positive impact while mitigating its negative consequences. Through these discussions, the organizers hope to equip young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a healthier relationship with social media.
